The Bhimbhetka Caves is the most visited attractions of Madhya Pradesh and the best tourist excursions from Bhopal. The amazing and natural rock caves are situated just 46 km from Bhopal which lies by the northern limits of Vindhya mountain Range. Bhimbetka is derived from the word Bhim ka bethika, the place where Bhim sat and meditated. These caves claim a distinction as the largest treasure house of prehistoric art in the country. |
These masterpieces were discovered in 1958 by Indian archaeologist Dr Wakankar.The entire region peppers with caves, more than 600 in number. Shaded in a thicket of teak and sal, amidst rock-strewn cliffs, they find enlistment as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are enchanting rock paintings here that date back to the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods adorning these caves. These paintings showcase the everyday life and events of people residing here in the caves. The rock paintings also depicted in profusion especially in a cave popularly referred to as ‘Zoo Rock’. Few caves here also preserve paintings that traverse various eras. |
