» Bhojpur Bhopal, Popular Excursions & Heritage Site

Bhojpur Bhojpur is rich with colossal historical and religious importance. The town and its attractions are proved to be the best visiting spots and most popular Bhopal excursions. This town is located at a distance of 28km. from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh; it was founded by the legendry Parmara king,
Dhar Raja Bhoj (1010-1053). Bhojpur is ideal for the tourists as the old temples and other constructions will give you the chance to delve in the town. The Bhojeshwar tourist is a rage with tourists, pilgrims, erudite scholars as well as researchers.

Bhojeshwar Temple: Bhojeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located near the Betwa River. The temple is more popularly known as Somnath in eastern Part of India. This impressive temple overlooks a vast, now dried-up lake. The Bhojeshwar Temple is also visited in large number by the locals and even by the tourists to offer prayers and witness a massive lingam which is about 2.3 meters high and 5.3 meters in circumference. The temple even today remains one of the best examples of temple architecture of the 11th-13th centuries.

Jain Temple: The Jain Temple is famous for the magnificent 20 feet high statue of Mahavira and two statues of Parsvanath. There are three images of tirthankaras as well inside the temple. The temple is situated close to Bhojeshwar temple. The style and architecture of both the temples is quite similar which points out that both the temples were built almost in the same period.

Cyclopean Dam: This dam was a marvel during olden times; the great dam now lay in ruins on the western side of Bhojpur. The dam was built on a vast lake which is no more there. Huge hills enclosed the entire area from all sides, but two big gaps were there that were blocked by different dams. The earthen dams were huge with the bigger one being 44 feet high and 300 feet thick and the smaller one being 24 feet high and 100 feet wide. The construction of the dams was done without using mortar.

How to get there: Bhojpur is well connected with other parts of the country by rail, road and air. The nearest airport to Bhojpur is Bhopal. There are many airlines that travel to Bhopal regularly. Buses between Bhopal and Bhojpur ply at regular intervals.
