Taj-ul-Masajid is regarded as one of the largest and most impressive mosque in central India. This mosque is one of the top landmark sites of Bhopal, located in the heart of the city. The building of this mosque was initiated by Shahjehan Begum of Bhopal when she became the ruler in 1868. |
| Taj-ul-Masajid can literally be translated as “The Crown of Mosques” and true to its name has been hovering over the skyline of Bhopal similar to the Jama Masjid of Delhi. Though the construction was initiated by Shahjehan Begum but due to lack of funds the mosque could not be completed. Later, in 1971 the construction was re-started through the efforts of donors like Maulana Muhammad Imran Khan. Taj-ul-Masajid ranks amongst the biggest mosques in Asia, covering an area of 23,312 sq. ft. This beautiful structure presents a spectacular sight and can easily be seen form far away places in Bhopal. The pink façade of the mosque is topped by two huge white-domed minarets standing at an altitude of 206 ft. In between these minarets are three huge bulbous domes and an attractive hallway supported by huge pillars beautifully crafted in stone. Visitors do get amazed by the site of the main prayer hall which is beautifully carved with eleven recessed arches. The polished marble flooring and a massive airy courtyard having two washing ponds for making ablution also adds to the attraction of the mosque. This mosque also houses a residential madarsa where young student form various parts on India stay to pursue further Islamic studies. |
